The Scars of your violence will never fade-‘The Glory’

Among drama writers, I like writer Kim Eun-sook the most.  I tend to watch every drama that person has written, and among them, I’d like to introduce one of the most dramatic and entertaining dramas. It’s “The Glory.” Once you start, you can’t stop, so please watch it with enough time.

1. The Plot

Moon Dong-eun, who suffered brutal bullying by Park Yeon-jin’s group during her school years, has spent her entire life seeking revenge against them. At last, with everything finally ready, Dong-eun appears as Yeon-jin’s daughter’s homeroom teacher… From now on, Dong-eun’s satisfying revenge begins.

2. The Cast and Director

At the role of Moon Dong-eun, actress Song Hye-kyo performed; at the role of Park Yeon-jin, actress Lim Ji-yeon from the film *Obsessed* played; at the role of Moon Dong-eun’s aide Kang Hyun-nam, actress Yeom Hye-ran took the role; at the role of Jeon Jae-joon, actor Park Sung-hoon played; and at the role of Choi Hye-jung, actress Cha Joo-young gave a passionate performance. The direction was handled by producer Ahn Gil-ho, who is well known for the drama "Record of Youth."

3. What to watch for

The topic of school violence is indeed a social issue that has become a hot topic in South Korea. It would be good to watch it focusing on how they can portray and present this topic in a way that is neither excessive nor lacking.  And actress Song Hye-kyo has so far focused more on romance roles than on genre dramas, so it would be nice to watch her acting transformation through The Glory this time. Above all, I thought it would be great if actual victims of school violence watched the drama and found strength in it.

4. Personal Review

The Glory was released on Netflix in two parts, and especially when the second part was released, even though it was episode 6, I remember staying up all night to watch it. And then I watched it once more, and I remember finishing the viewing again and again without stopping, just like the first time.  The reason is that the content was so interesting that I couldn’t stop halfway through. The first film features Dong-eun’s childhood memories and narrative, so if you empathize with that, there are quite a few scenes that can feel somewhat difficult. But the second film truly begins a story of revenge, so it would be good to watch it as a point of interest to see how the theme of rewarding evil and punishing good is explored. And just as all the characters in The Glory actually exist, the performances of all the actors and their chemistry with one another were excellent. In particular, the character Ha Do-young, Yeon-jin’s husband, felt especially compelling.  And Jeon Jae-jun’s lines also add some fun here and there. Even now, I am thinking. Could Moon Dong-eun have found true happiness after avenging himself? Though it is just one drama, I hope it becomes a warning notice that sounds an alarm to school violence perpetrators.
